I purchased this hoping for a deeper education in irezumi symbolism, but the information is pretty surface level. It only touches on common images (dragons, carp, a couple common deities) and the descriptions aren't anything deeper than a novice western irezumi fan doesn't already know. The photography and accompanying narratives are interesting at times but there are other way better books (some cited as reference for this one, lol) with full color, high quality, multi angle photos of irezumi suits. An encyclopedia this is not, but it captures the author's *glimpse* into some aspects of yakuza culture well. I'll be returning it because it doesn't have much value as an educational reference and the photography pales compared to other books on my shelf.

I really enjoyed this book. There's a lot of text along with the pictures. It might've been nice if we had a few more pictures, but the explanation of yakuza life and thoughts on their tattoos really made up for it. As someone with a big yakuza collection of books for research I was happy to learn something new from this book.
